Emmanuel recalls her mother's initial awareness of her love of acting and her dream to become an actress while she was in school at St Hilda's School. This school closed in 2014 , and changed into Westcliff High School. She claimed that she first noticed her passion for acting at the age of three years old. Her mother suggested that she take dancing, singing, as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King Young Nala played the character as Young Nala. The next year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. She revealed to Jimmy Kimmel that she learned about the role while working as an assistant at a clothing shop. Emmanuel was promoted to a regular cast member in 2015, after winning the part. Missandei is the sole prominent female character in the show was a black woman. The scene where she died in chains was not well-liked by fans. It was also called an example of evasion and invoked images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to her death was huge because she was alone. I'm sure that many who felt excluded or marginalized had connected with Missandei or believed that they were represented by her. When she died - and in the manner that she died, it was a traumatic experience for many because they thought, 'Oh that's not true! This is how they want to pay tribute to the one woman of their race.
